Half the Workforce Menstruates. Why Aren't We Talking About Menstrual Health?

Menstrual health affects millions of people in the workplace every day, yet it remains one of the conversations we're least likely to have.

Over the past few years, organisations have become more open about discussing topics such as mental health, wellbeing and neurodiversity. These conversations have helped create more supportive workplaces where people feel able to bring their whole selves to work. But when it comes to menstruation, many of us still feel uncomfortable talking about it.

Why Menstrual Health Matters at Work

Menstrual cycles can influence energy levels, concentration, mood, motivation and overall wellbeing. Some people may experience very little disruption, while others can face significant challenges that impact their working day.

Yet despite this, menstrual health is often overlooked in workplace conversations. Many employees continue to navigate symptoms quietly, while managers and colleagues may feel unsure about how to approach the topic or what support looks like in practice.

The reality is that people don't leave their health experiences at the door when they start work each morning. Understanding this is an important part of creating workplaces where people can do their best work.

Inclusion Starts with Understanding

Creating inclusive workplaces isn't about treating everyone the same. It's about recognising that people experience work differently and ensuring they have the support they need to thrive.

Whether we're talking about neurodiversity, disability, mental health, caring responsibilities or menstrual health, understanding different experiences helps us build workplaces that work better for everyone.

Sometimes meaningful change starts with something simple: learning more and being willing to have the conversation.
